Volunteer: After School Program Gardener

The position of the Volunteer Gardener supports North County Lifeline’s after school program, La Casita. La Casita is set up as an early intervention program for at-risk youth and provide services for (on average) 60 children ages 5-12 on a daily basis. The site allows for a safe space for children to go to when released from school. The Volunteer Gardener plays a vital role in maintenance support to sustain and expand the garden at La Casita. The garden is used as an educational tool to help introduce the children to the health benefits of new fruits and vegetables and the basics of growing food and its connection to the natural world.

 

Worksite: La Casita is located in a community of Oceanside. The garden is in the backyard of La Casita.

 

General Responsibilities: General upkeep of crop: weeding, replenishing soil, and watering crops as needed Planning for seasonal planting, preparing garden beds, and planting new crops Harvesting produce for the children to eat Notifying Volunteer Program Staff of any need for supplies or tools Overall cleanliness and presentation of the garden and proper care of garden tools

 

Requirements: Knowledge of basic gardening is preferred, but not required Ability to work outdoors Enjoys being around elementary aged children Positive role model

The position of After School Program Tutor supports North County Lifeline’s after school program, Club Crown Heights at La Casita. La Casita is set up as an early intervention program for at-risk youth and provide services for (on average) 30 children ages 6 to 12 on a daily basis. The site allows for a safe space for children to go to when released from school.

 

Specific Activities Tutor elementary age students in basic math or literacy Provide private instruction to individual or small groups of students to improve academic performance especially in reading or math Collaborate with La Casita staff to determine student needs and develop tutoring plan Keep record on student learning plans and activity logs Enhance self-esteem and confidence in the student through patience and encouragement Models excitement about learning through a positive adult relationship

 

Qualifications/Requirements At least 2 years of study at an institution of higher education Possess at least 1 year of youth or education related experience prior to start date, such as: Experience as a tutor or teacher Experience as a paraprofessional or instructional aide Experience as a camp counselor or youth activity leader

Work Schedule
Minimum commitment of six months or a semester is required
La Casita’s operating hours are:

School Season (3:00pm – 5:30pm on Monday – Friday; 2pm – 5pm on Wednesday)

Summer Season ( 1:00-4:00pm Monday- Friday ) 


Must be available at least one weekday afternoon (minimum 2 hours per day)
No tutoring on Fridays
